St. Helena's Episcopal Church was built in 1724 and is one of the oldest operating churches in the United States. The religious center for many wealthy and influential families, the church and its surrounding grounds holds the graves of many nineteenth century American elite and army officers, including Civil War Brigadier Generals Stephen Elliott, Jr. and Richard Heron Anderson. The church is located near the city center, within walking distance of the University of South Carolina - Beaufort campus.
